Molecular crowding on the living cell surface is revealed by the redistributions of fluorescence-labeled surface proteins in electrical potential gradients. This pseudocolor digital image shows induced asymmetric concentration profiles of fluorescein-labeled immunoglobulin E receptors on rat basophilic leukemia cell surfaces. Strongly enhanced thermodynamic activities of cell surface proteins even at normal concentrations were found by quantitative analysis of these images. See page 61. [T. A. Ryan, J. Meyers, B.
