About the Cover

While previously believed to be “armor” and/or structures for “displays,” it now appears that the plates along the arched back of the dinosaur Stegosaurus served an important thermoregulatory function as forced convection heat-loss fins. Such fins are not unlike fins used in compact engineering heat exchangers. See page 1123. [From an original etching © by Daniel Rosner, Yale University, 1976]
