Western blotting: A guide to current methods

Western blotting—easily recognizable by the distinct images of laddered bands that it generates—has remained a relatively popular protein detection technique over the past 36 years. From immunology to neuroscience to drug discovery, the fields to which Western blots have contributed are wide ranging. Science and its family of journals have published hundreds of research articles that have used the technique since it was first described, as it has been a useful tool in many scientific discoveries. In this booklet, we invite you to explore some of the history of Western blotting as we take a look back at some of the highly cited advances to which the method has contributed and explore some of the many ways the technique can be optimized to help create higher quality and more reproducible data.
