Re: Thanks, Science, for Katrina Coverage

I am a researcher in Dr. Seth Pincus' lab in New Orleans who was
featured in your Sept.9 article. I want to thank Science for allowing
those of us without subscriptions to access Science online and also AAAS
for setting up the Hurricane Brokerage Service site for those scientists
who have lost lab space, equipment, and supplies. I will try to contact
everyone I know in the New Orleans scientific community to tell them about
this.
We are all trying to figure out how to start again when many of our
valuable samples, animals, etc. have been lost. My husband, an LSU Med
School professor, has not been able to get to his lab for 3 weeks and his
technicians and grad students are scattered across the country. One of my
own lab colleagues has lost her house. It is hard to decide what to do
when so many things need to come together in working order to let us
resume our lives: our homes, schools for our children, and our lab sites.
New Orleans has a larger scientific community than many people realize and
I hope it can come back from this disaster stronger. |
