Re: First commercial lighting used manufactured gas

Schubert and Kim wrote that the first commercial technology for
lighting used natural gas. However, the first commercial gaslights used
manufactured gas made from coal, not natural gas. This is reflected in the
name of the first gas company formed in 1812: "Chartered Gas Light and
Coke of London" (1). The "coke" mentioned in the company name
is a by-product of the gas manufacturing process.
