William W. Fitzhugh has personal (and courageous) experience with
battling the cult history and archaeology extolling supposed American
ventures by the medieval Norse. His thoughtful, well informed review of
"Maps, Myths, and Men" is therefore an honor, and I read it with gratitude
and pleasure.
For the sake of order, however, it needs pointing out that I do not
suggest in my book that Father Josef Fischer, S.J. "created the map to
gain favor with the Nazis." I argue the exact opposite, namely that the
Vinland Map was an anti-Nazi tease.
