GEOPHYSICS:
An Ensemble View of Earth's Inner Core

Malcolm Sambridge

It has long been known that Earth's inner core is solid, but its precise structure remains a topic of much debate. In his Perspective, Sambridge compares different computational strategies that have been used to derive the core structure from seismic data. He highlights the "neighbourhood sampling" approach used by Beghein and Trampert, whose results suggest that the structure of the inner core is more complex than previously thought.
