MARGUERITE BAY, ANTARCTICA--Spring is in the air on the Antarctic Peninsula, where rising temperatures are eroding floating ice shelves that have been in place for millennia. The melting could augur a far more perilous warming of the mainland ice sheets, with catastrophic effects on global sea levels.
