Sociogenomics Takes Flight

Gene E. Robinson

The loss of wings in worker ants has contributed to their spectacular ecological success. In his Perspective, Robinson discusses new work (Abouheif and Wray) that analyzes the expression of genes involved in wing development of worker and queen ants of different species. As Robinson explains, the unexpectedly different gene expression profiles that the authors detected highlight how different genomes can achieve the same end in different ways, an important lesson to bear in mind as the new field of sociogenomics develops.
