RIBOSOME STRUCTURE:
The Ribosome in Action

The ribosome is the site of protein synthesis. Here transfer RNA (tRNA), carrying an amino acid, binds to its cognate messenger RNA (mRNA), and amino acids are linked in the appropriate sequence. In his Perspective, Dahlberg discusses two papers in this week's issue that give a view of the ribosome in action. Yusupov et al. have determined the structure of a complete ribosome, with mRNA and three tRNAs bound, at 5.5 angstrom resolution, and Ogle et al. describe how the ribosome checks for the correct mRNA-tRNA interactions.
