Oxidative Stress and Cancer: A beta-Catenin Convergence

The multifunctional protein beta-catenin is a critical component of the widely conserved Wnt signaling pathway. Misregulation of this important protein is a causative factor in some human cancers. A Perspective by Bowerman discusses new findings that beta-catenin can act through the FOXO family of transcription factors to promote survival of mammalian cells under stressful conditions and increase the life span of C. elegans. These intriguing results have interesting implications for tumorigenesis, cancer therapy, and aging.
