Neurons in the brain make many thousands of connections (synapses) with other neurons. In a Perspective, Thompson discusses a technical tour-de-force (Koester and Johnson) that reveals subtle differences in the characteristics of neurotransmitter release, which depend on the type of postsynaptic target cells with which the presynaptic cell connects.
