A Ringing Confirmation of Spintronics Theory

"Spintronics" devices aim to exploit the angular momentum or "spin" of the electron. Before such a device can be realized, both theoretical and experimental challenges must be overcome. For example, it is known that a current of spin-polarized electrons can change the magnetic orientation of a nanometer-scale ferromagnet. But there are two competing theories about how this effect works. In his Perspective, Covington highlights the report by Krivorotov et al. (4), whose extensive set of dynamical measurements provides support for the "spin-torque" model.
