Tinkering with DNA may not seem like a particularly good idea to biologists, but organic chemists seem driven to redesign the genetic code. In his Perspective, Benner discusses the many ways in which organic chemistry can be used to produce artificial DNA molecules that have broad therapeutic applications in diagnostic testing for human diseases.
