MOLECULAR BIOLOGY:
RNAs Turn On in Tandem

Michael Famulok

The activity of many proteins is regulated allosterically such that a small molecule binding to a site distant from the active site alters the conformation of the active site and hence its activity. In his Perspective, Famulok discusses the discovery of a bacterial riboswitch composed of two RNA molecules in the untranslated region of messenger RNAs that, when both bound by glycine, allosterically regulate genes controlling glycine metabolism (Mandal et al.).
