BIOTECHNOLOGY:
Japanese Controversies over Transgenic Crop Regulation

Kazuo N. Watanabe,1,2* Mohammad Taeb,3 Haruko Okusu3

Establishment of the new Japanese law on biosafety has changed overall R&D and marketing systems on agricultural biotechnology. It has made legal procedures more comprehensive, which should facilitate research on, and uses of, the technology. However, the authors of this Policy Forum point out that international and domestic stakeholders need to understand how the rules about transport may affect them. Furthermore, because of increasing concerns in Japan over the risks of transgenic crops for health and the environment, the agricultural biotechnology area may suffer.
