The consumption of glucose in the brain has been attributed principally to the activity of neurons. In their Perspective, Pellerin and Magistretti discuss an elegant imaging study (Kasischke et al.) that dissects the metabolic activity of rat hippocampal slices and reveals the intertwined metabolisms of neurons and astrocytes (a type of glial cell) in the brain.
