HIV/AIDS IN CHINA:
Poised for Takeoff?

BEIJING--Several forces have compelled the Chinese government to revamp its HIV/AIDS strategy. Some outside assessments have warned that China's epidemic is poised for takeoff and has all the ingredients for a major disaster. Officials are working with a new sense of urgency--sharpened by the recognition that China badly mishandled last year's outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).
