EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY:
The Wide Spectrum of Sex and Gender

A review by Alison Jolly

Evolution's Rainbow Diversity, Gender, and Sexuality in Nature and People
by Joan Roughgarden
University of California Press, Berkeley, 2004. 480 pp. $27.50. ISBN 0-520-24073-1.

In this long-anticipated (and already controversial) work, Roughgarden discusses the origins and development of sexual and gender diversity in vertebrates. She argues against Darwinian sexual selection and a range of generally accepted scientific concepts and theories.
The reviewer is in the Department of Biology and Environmental Sciences, University of Sussex, Mail 32 Southover High Street, Lewes BN7 1HX, UK. E-mail: ajolly{at}sussex.ac.uk
