DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY:
A Pattern of Precision

Paul W. Sternberg

The nematode is a simple organism that has proved invaluable for studying cell fate decisions during development. In his Perspective, Sternberg discusses new work (Yoo et al.) showing that cooperation between the EGF and LIN-12 signaling pathways determines the fates adopted by vulval precursor cells during vulval development in the nematode.
