Most of the oldest and most important fossils of human ancestors have been unearthed in Africa, but until recently no black Africans led these expeditions. Now, after decades of effort, a handful of black Africans are taking leadership roles in human origins research, finding stunning fossils, publishing in top journals, and leading field teams.
