NSF Steps Over Political Hurdles to Build Mobile Radar Facility

Space weather researchers were crestfallen in 1998 when a powerful legislator blocked a long-planned upper atmospheric radar facility in Canada's Arctic region rather than in his native state of Alaska. But this month the National Science Foundation decided to proceed with a mobile and modular facility that will satisfy his geographic requirements--and perform even more science than the original version.
