BIOTECHNOLOGY:
Sheep Fail to Produce Golden Fleece

The company that helped to clone Dolly the sheep is fighting for survival now that a key project has been put on ice. PPL Therapeutics announced on 19 June that a partner, the German drug giant Bayer, has suspended development of a treatment for lung ailments, one of PPL's two main potential products. In response, PPL says it will lay off up to 140 of its 165 employees and will scrap plans for a $70 million manufacturing plant.
