The seeds of environmental activism sprouted during the 19th century in the highly scenic Lake District of northwest England. Here, tensions were played out between the need for new freshwater supplies for the growing industrial metropolis of Manchester and the desire of the Lake District inhabitants and landowners not to have their romantic landscape despoiled.
