Financial Crisis Puts Comet Mission on the Ropes

CAMBRIDGE, U.K.--The science program of the European Space Agency is $230 million in the red this year--an amount equal to more than half its $430 million budget. The only expendable item is Rosetta, a $1 billion mission to drop a lander onto the surface of a comet.
