Two influential U.S. senators have ridden to the rescue of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which has been scrambling to comply with a surprise directive from the White House Office of Management and Budget to commit $233 million of its fiscal year 2003 budget to "procure" millions of doses of a new-generation anthrax vaccine.
