CHEMISTRY:
Building Solutions--One Molecule at a Time

Alex J. Huneycutt and Richard J. Saykally

Theoretical and spectroscopic studies of small water clusters have yielded important insights into the structural and dynamic properties of water and aqueous solutions. In their Perspective, Huneycutt and Saykally highlight the report Robertson et al., who show that the first solvation shells of the fluoride and hydroxide anions contain exactly five and four water molecules, respectively. In a related study, Asmis et al. report the spectrum of the protonated water dimer. Such studies may shed light on processes not only in bulk liquid water but also the atmosphere.
