METABOLIC ENGINEERING:
Researchers Create First Autonomous Synthetic Life Form

Two years ago, a team of chemists engineered the genes of a bacterium to incorporate a 21st amino acid into its proteins. Now, in a paper in this week's issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society, the team reports going one step further by engineering a bacterium that also manufactures the compound by itself.
