Stanford Gets Serious About Space Physics

Four consecutive Nobel Prizes in the 1990s put physicists at Stanford University and the nearby Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) atop their field. However, weakness in one area marred their portfolio: astrophysics. Last week, Stanford and SLAC filled that hole by creating a new astrophysics institute--and luring two of the field's stars to direct it.
