ASTRONOMY:
Fire Destroys Historic Australian Observatory

Explosive wildfires near the Australian capital of Canberra gutted the Mount Stromlo Observatory on 18 January. The facility, Australia's oldest research observatory and home to the country's largest group of astronomers, was largely destroyed, but all staff and students were evacuated safely in advance of the wind-driven flames.
