Enhanced: Waltzing with O2

Charles T. Campbell

Surface oxygen vacancies play an important role in catalysis and photocatalysis involving transition metal oxide surfaces. In his Perspective, Campbell highlights the report by Schaub et al., who have discovered a fundamentally new mechanism for the migration of these vacancies on titanium dioxide. The mechanism probably operates on many transition metal oxide surfaces and will be particularly important when molecular oxygen is present.
