GENOMICS:
Vertebrate Genomes Compared

S. Blair Hedges and Sudhir Kumar

The complete genome sequence of the tiger pufferfish Fugu (Aparicio et al.) should enable valuable comparisons to be made with the human genome. In a Perspective, Hedges and Kumar discuss how the Fugu genome sheds light on the genetics of human disease and on the evolutionary relationships of vertebrates.
