TV Drama Sparks Scientific Backlash

The plot of the recent BBC thriller "Fields of Gold"--in which a gene for vancomycin resistance is inadvertently transferred from wheat into the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, provoking a deadly and uncontrollable outbreak of staph infections--is far-fetched, many experts say. Some scientists, concerned that the alarming story line will erode already low public confidence over the safety of GM crops, mounted a high-profile attack last week.
