Putting the Brakes on Regeneration

The recalcitrance of nerves in the central nervous system (CNS) to regenerate has thwarted efforts to treat patients with spinal cord and other CNS injuries. In their Perspective, McKerracher and Ellezam discuss new findings (Goldberg et al.) revealing that a switch from an axonal to a dendritic growth mode during development may carry over into the adult, preventing CNS neurons from regenerating their axons.
