WEIMAR, GERMANY--A dedicated team is working to preserve every detail of a unique fossil record of the past 2 million years. The carefully cataloged collections of the Senckenberg Research Station for Quaternary Paleontology here are a treasure trove for researchers hoping to piece together the natural history of Eurasia: how animals and plants migrated and gave rise to new species and how climate and other environmental changes led to their decline and disappearance.
