PLANETARY SCIENCE:
A New Solar System Basalt

Meteorites can provide important insights into the early universe and the properties of other planets or asteroids. And they continue to be good for surprises. In his Perspective, Palme highlights the report by Yamaguchi et al., who have analyzed a meteorite from Northwest Africa (NWA011). This meteorite clearly originated from a partially molten object, but does not match the properties of known basalts from the inner solar system. Of the inner planets, only Mercury cannot be ruled out as a possible source of this meteorite.
