Skiing Toward Nonstop mRNA Decay

Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells have quality assurance mechanisms that operate during translation to prevent buildup of deleterious protein products. In her Perspective, Maquat discusses new work (Frischmeyer et al. and van Hoof et al.) that describes how eukaryotic cells identify and degrade messenger RNA that lacks a termination codon.
