CLINICAL TRIALS:
Proposed Rules Aim to Curb Financial Conflicts of Interest

A new policy adopted by the Association of American Medical Colleges urges universities to disqualify investigators from conducting clinical trials if the scientists hold a significant financial interest in companies that could be affected by the results. The guidelines would apply to all human subjects research, not just studies funded by the National Institutes of Health or other federal agencies. Critics argue that the new rules could impede innovation, however, and even supporters worry that implementing them will be expensive.
