Did Plaster Hold Neolithic Society Together?

ÇATALHÖYÜK, TURKEY--Recent studies around a 9500-year-old settlement here suggest it was built in the middle of marshland. How then did its inhabitants grow their food? One controversial theory holds that what drew people to the settlement was not agriculture but the abundance of lime-rich clays that the people of Ğatalhöyük used to cover their walls, floors, and ovens--and on which they created stunning works of art.
