ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE:
Bad for the Heart, Bad For the Mind?

Researchers have built a case over the past few years that a small protein called b amyloid (Ab) causes the brain degeneration of patients with Alzheimer's. But they have also suspected that Ab has accomplices. High blood cholesterol levels may be one of these malefactors, possibly because they aid and abet Ab production, several teams now suggest. The work raises the possibility that cholesterol-lowering drugs will protect against the disease.
