Biology reformers face many difficulties when trying to improve introductory courses. Biology, in addition to its mind-boggling diversity, lacks an encompassing professional organization that can help impose order. Soaring enrollments also shield biologists from the pressure felt by their colleagues in the physical sciences (see main text).
