Champion of Chromatin: Alan Wolffe (1959-2001)

Traditionally viewed as little more than DNA and its protein packaging, chromatin has recently gained new respect for its regulatory role (see main text). And although dozens of biologists have worked hard over the past decade to make that link, none have been as eloquent as Alan Wolffe in making the scientific community sit up and take notice. Sadly, Wolffe died in a car accident in late May while attending a scientific meeting in Brazil.
