Iraq Opening Sets Off Scramble for Sites

WARKA--The return of foreign archaeologists to Iraq marks an abrupt and dramatic end to Iraq's near-total isolation from scientific circles since 1990, following its invasion of Kuwait. Archaeologists from Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Belgium, and Austria are now preparing a new generation of excavations that will profit from advanced field methods and technologies. But frustrated American and British archaeologists are being forced to cool their heels due to travel restrictions imposed by their governments, leaving them out of the scramble for prime sites in which their European and Japanese counterparts are currently engaged.
