Carbohydrates have long been avoided by chemists and biologists because of their structural complexity, which makes them difficult to analyze and extremely difficult to synthesize. Now, recent advances in the study of carbohydrate chemistry and biology have put sugar-based drugs on medicine's menu, where they are garnering impressive early reviews. Carbohydrate compounds are currently in clinical trials aimed at fighting everything from inflammation and tissue rejection to hepatitis and cancer.
