B-Meson Factories Make a "Number From Hell"

SAN FRANCISCO--Matter and antimatter were forged in equal amounts during the big bang but then decayed into slightly different sets of particles, giving matter a competitive edge. Physicists disagree about how this imbalance arose. New data reported here last week at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science are at odds with the imbalance predicted by the reigning model of particle physics--but not by enough to settle the argument. Scientists are therefore calling it "the number from hell."
