CELL BIOLOGY:
A Lipid Oils the Endocytosis Machine

David J. Gillooly and Harald Stenmark

Endocytosis, the formation of membrane vesicles that carry various cargo, is a crucial feature of a cell's transportation system. In a Perspective, Gillooly and Stenmark discuss new findings (Ford et al., and Itoh et al.) showing that the membrane lipid PIP2 (phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate) is crucial for assembling the molecular machinery of endocytosis.
