NewsWhile theorists try to bring them under one explanatory umbrella, the cosmic rarities known as soft gamma repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous x-ray pulsars (AXPs) seem to insist on their differences. Theorists would love to show that the two objects are really the same thing, possibly at different stages of its existence. Unfortunately, the reigning theory to explain the radiation from SGRs is incompatible with that for AXPs.
