GENOMICS:
Money and Machines Fuel China's Push in Sequencing

BEIJING--China hopes that a heavy investment in genomics will help it to fight disease, foster economic growth, and tap its vast biological diversity. Chinese researchers welcome their country's entry into the field, but they are sharply divided over what path it should take. One group is pushing for the rapid sequencing of as many genomes--human, plant, and other animals--as possible, while another is hoping to concentrate on finding genes and sequencing only those species with the greatest impact on human health and the environment.
