MOLECULAR BIOLOGY:
RNA Interference

Phillip A. Sharp and Phillip D. Zamore

Double-stranded RNA can silence the expression of a gene with a corresponding sequence, a process called RNA interference (RNAi). RNAi can be transferred from parent to offspring in the worm. In a Perspective, Sharp and Zamore discuss a new study (Grishok et al.) that identifies the genes involved in the inheritance of RNAi in C. elegans.

Zamore is in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Massachusetts Medical School, 55 Lake Avenue North, Worcester, MA 01655, USA. E-mail: phillip.zamore{at}ummassmed.edu
