AAAS MEETING:
How to Steer a Hurricane

WASHINGTON, D.C.--A team of climatologists has proposed that a long-term climate pattern over the Atlantic Ocean steers most hurricanes toward either the Gulf of Mexico or the Eastern Seaboard, but not both, for decades to millennia at a time. They reported the results of their comparison of weather records and hurricane landfall reports from the last 150 years at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which was held here 17 to 22 February.
